When asked which characteristics best capture what it means to be an American, New Jersey adults point to respect for religious beliefs as the most important, followed by voting regularly and speaking English as one’s primary language. Buying only American-made products and having been born in the United States were among the least important characteristics, according to the latest Rutgers-Eagleton Poll.

NEW JERSEYANS NOW SUPPORT GAY CIVIL UNIONS BY 2-1
By a ratio of two to one, New Jersey adults support legalizing civil unions for gays and lesbians, while a majority supports gay marriage and opposes a proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would define marriage as solely being between a man and a woman, according to the latest Rutgers-Eagleton Poll.

MENENDEZ MAINTAINS LEAD IN SENATE RACE
U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez holds a four-point lead over state Sen. Tom Kean Jr. in the race for U.S. Senate, and a growing percentage of voters are associating Kean with President Bush, according to the latest Rutgers-Eagleton Poll.

NEW JERSEYANS FAVOR FURTHER SPENDING CUTS OVER TAX INCREASES
As the July 1 deadline for a state budget approaches, a new Rutgers-Eagleton Poll finds that New Jersey residents don’t approve of Gov. Jon Corzine’s handling of the budget; they prefer budget cuts to tax increases, with tourism promotion, the arts, and roads and highways the top candidates for spending reductions.
