THE PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN: BUSH GAINS ON ECONOMIC ISSUES, IS WINNING THE MIDDLE CLASS VOTE

Corning out of last Sunday’s presidential debate, George Bush has gained an edge over his Democratic rival Michael Dukakis among New Jersey voters on the all important issues of the economy and taxes. Also, Bush is now seen as the candidate most likely to provide strong leadership for the country, according to the latest Star-Ledger/Eagleton Poll.

Going into tonight’s first presidential debate, New Jersey’s attractive prize of 16 electoral votes is clearly up for grabs. The latest Star-Ledger/Eagleton Poll finds George Bush and Michael Dukakis running neck and neck in the Garden State, with Bush holding a statistically insignificant lead of 47 to 44 percent–well within the poll’s margin of error.

NEW JERSEY DRIVERS: DRINKING DOWN; AGGRESSIVENESS UP PUBLIC SUPPORT FOR RAISING THE SPEED LIMIT

There’s mixed news for New Jersey motorists this holiday weekend. While there has been a decrease in the number of drivers who report mixing gasoline with alcohol while on the road, the latest Scar-Ledger/Eagleton Poll also finds more people now characterizing Garden State motorists as rude or aggressive than six years ago.
