CLINTON’S PRESIDENTIAL CHANCES ON THE UPSWING; DOLE RANKS TOP AMONG REPUBLICANS, WHITMAN RATINGS NOT HURT BY INCREASED STATE PESSIMISM
President Clinton gets a boost from New Jerseyans with half saying he deserves to be reelected - a 19 percentage point increase in the past year. In addition, his positive job performance ratings have increased 8 percentage points since September to 47 percent. Among the possible Republican candidates, more New Jerseyans say they would vote for Senator Robert Dole for President (10%) than for Pat Buchanan (5%), Steve Forbes (3%), or Lamar Alexander (2%). At this time, 3-in-10 New Jerseyans have not selected who they will vote for

PLAYING THE NEW JERSEY LOTTERY
Playing the New Jersey Lottery is an experience shared by most of the state's residents. At some time, 8-in-10 New Jerseyans have purchased lottery tickets in their state. In addition, 2-in-3 New Jerseyans played the state lottery in the past year and half played in the past month. Close to 1-in-3 residents usually purchase lottery tickets at least once a week.

NEW JERSEYAN’S GENEROSITY AN ESTIMATED $3 BILLION DOLLARS DONATED IN PAST YEAR
In the past year New Jerseyans donated an estimated $3 billion dollars to various types of organizations. The main beneficiaries these contributions are organizations dealing with health issues (42%) and religious organizations (27%). In addition, last year close to half of the residents gave to local organizations such as the fire department (51%) and first aid squad (48%) and about 4-in-10 gave to their local police (42%).

FEWER JERSEYANS’ REPORT BENEFITS FROM THE 30% STATE INCOME TAX REDUCTION
New Jerseyans' expectations to benefit from the 30% state income tax reduction have been on a decline since February 1994. Currently 31 percent feel they have benefited from the tax cut program which is a 17 percentage point decrease from the beginning of Governor Christie Todd Whitman's term in office when 48 percent of the state's residents thought they would gain from the 30% tax reduction. Even though residents say they have not benefitted from the tax reduction, a majority of New Jerseyans are satisfied with the program.
