New Jerseyans’ Ratings of Where They Live and Neighborhood Safety Are Positive Overall, but Sharply Divided by Race, Ethnicity and Other Demographics
While New Jerseyans as a whole rate the quality of life in their local area positively and feel safe where they live, perceptions vary widely based on who you ask and where they are located, according to the latest Rutgers-Eagleton Poll.

NEW JERSEYANS WORRY ABOUT GUN VIOLENCE
Two-thirds of New Jersey’s registered voters are “very concerned” about the scope of gun violence in America, according to a Rutgers-Eagleton Poll released today. The poll, taken both before and after the Aug. 24 Empire State Building shooting, also finds 65 percent of voters think controlling gun ownership is more important than protecting gun owner rights. Voters are split, however, on whether America has become more violent in recent years (42 percent) or if violence is simply more visible in the news (48 percent).

MAJORITY OF NEW JERSEYANS SAY RAVI’S SENTENCE NOT TOUGH ENOUGH
Just over half of New Jersey residents believe Dharun Ravi’s sentence for bias intimidation and invasion of privacy in the Tyler Clementi case was “not tough enough,” according to a new Rutgers-Eagleton Poll. Thirty-nine percent think Ravi got “the sentence he deserves,” seven percent believe the punishment was “too tough,” and four percent are unsure.
