Connection Study (2000)
New Jersey Transit
This study involved focus groups with commuters and a survey with 800
residents who live along the eastern part of the Boonton line and northern
spur of the Morris & Essex line. The main objective was to assess
potential issues arising out of the new direct rail connection to Manhattan.
Hudson-Bergen
Light Rail Line Study (1999, 2000)
New Jersey Transit
The main objective of this study was to obtain information about the attitudes
and awareness of New Jersey residents living in towns along the proposed
route of the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Transit System. The study involved
a telephone survey of 800 residents in the study area and two focus groups
with area commuters. In 2000, a combination panel study and new cross-section
was surveyed after the line began operating.

and Congestion Survey (1998)
Alliance for Action
This telephone survey of 800 New Jersey adults assessed transportation
use and perceptions of congestion. Among the objectives of the survey
was ascertaining personal costs associated with road maintenance and congestion
(e.g. car repairs, travel time, productivity, etc.).
Average
Vehicle Occupancy Survey (1992, 1994, 1996)

This survey began in 1992 in 13 northern New Jersey counties to monitor
compliance with reducing the number of single occupancy commuters. The
study was expanded to the entire state in 1994 and tracked in 1996. The
study also measured avergae vehicle occupancy for non-work travel. In
all, over 16,000 interviews were conducted with residents in the statewide
surveys.
Midtown
Direct Marketing Study (1995, 1996)

The main objective of this study was to obtain information about the attitudes
and awareness of northern New Jersey residents on a new Midtown Direct
rail service. This included telephone surveys (n=400) and focus groups
before and after the line began operation. One component of the 1995 baseline
study was developing the name for the service.
E-ZPass
Toll Program (1996)
Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission
CPIP conducted a telephone survey with a list-based sample of 805 Delaware
River bridge users to identify attitudes about a possible electronic toll
system. The study also involved focus groups with bridge users and transportation
personnel.

Strategic Planning Study (1994,1996)
New Jersey Department of Transportation
CPIP conducted six focus group discussions with residents in different
geographic areas in New Jersey. The main objective was to design consumer
measures and guidelines for the development of the state strategic plan.
These outcome measures were incorporated into a statewide telephone surevy
of 800 residents conducted by CPIP.
I-95
Corridor Coalition Market Research Study (1995)
New Jersey Highway Authority/I-95 Corridor Coalition
This study was part of a broad-based effort to improve travel in the I-95
Corridor from Maine to Virginia. CPIP employed telephone interviews to
identify market segments for four different information products and developed
a diary-based instrument to measure travel experiences. The sample included
200 I-95 travelers who received certain types of information and a control
group of 200 similar I-95 travelers in order to evaluate the impact of
information on holiday travel experiences.

Transit Violence Prevention Project (1995)
National Transit Institute
The main objective of this national study was the development of interactive
training materials and training guidelines for transit providers. The
purpose was to assist public transit operators deal with threatening and
violent situations. CPIP conducted focus groups and surveys with public
transit workers across the country, and facilitated a final workshop.

Marketing Study (1995)
New Jersey Department of Transportation
As part of NJDOTs effort to improve its commuter information services,
CPIP conducted 400 telephone interviews with a statewide sample. This
survey established a baseline for awareness, usage, and evaluation of
DOT services to decrease the number of vehicle work trips in the state.

Public Opinion Survey (1989-1995)

A series of seven annual studies examining awareness, use, and attitudes
about public transportation in the state. The survey methodology involved
a random probability sample of 800 residents contacted by telephone.

of New Jersey Employee Trip Reduction Survey (1994)

As part of the effort to monitor single vehicle use in New Jersey, CPIP
analyzed 28,303 self-administered surveys conducted with employees in
New Jersey state departments. Individual reports were provided for each
of the 42 departments that participated.

CPIP conducted four focus group discussions in various geographic areas
of New Jersey to understand how residents perceive congestion and to identify
opinions on the causes and possible solutions to traffic congestion.

Stop Sign Development Study (1994)

To assist NJ Transit in the development of new signs for their bus stops,
CPIP conducted four focus group discussions with light and heavy users
of the bus system.

Study of NJ TRANSIT Advertising Campaign (1994-1996)
New Jersey Transit
CPIP conducted a baseline survey of 1,000 state residents followed by
quarterly tracking surveys. Quarterly reports were provided to assist
NJ Transit with the improvement of its advertising program.

Strategic Planning Forum (1994)

One-on-one interviews were conducted with about 50 New Jersey decision
makers to assess their opinion about the future of transportation in the
state. The results of these interviews were discussed at a planning forum
facilitated by CPIP.

Highway Research (1993)

CPIP conducted six focus group discussions to identify state residents
perceptions about intelligent vehicle highway systems (IVHS). The research
also included group discussions with leaders in the Atlantic City tourism
community and commercial truck/bus drivers.

Plus Employee Transportation Trip Reduction Program (1993)
New Jersey Transit
Telephone interviews were conducted with 900 employee transportation trip
reduction coordinators in major companies in Essex and Union counties.
The main objective of the research was to identify company efforts to
reduce employee single occupancy vehicle use. In addition, a survey was
conducted with 500 employees in these two counties to see what they perceived
their companies were doing to provide programs to reduce single occupancy
vehicle use.
