There are very few defenders of New Jersey’s present tax structure

A recent poll conducted by Rutgers’ Eagleton Institute found very few defenders of New Jersey’s present tax structure. When presented with a statewide property tax or a state income tax as alternatives to the present system, only 13% chose the status quo. In responding to one question, approximately half the sample supported a statewide property tax in which “the tax rate would be the same for all communities.” In responding to another question, about half said they would support “a state income tax if it led to a reduction in local property taxes for schools.”
