THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION: ISSUES AND CANDIDATE QUALITIES

Democratic presidential candidate Walter Mondale has a difficult task ahead of him in his debate with Ronald Reagan tonight. He must make the election less of a referendum on Reagan and more of a choice between two candidates. A Star—Ledger/Eagleton poll conducted between October 8 and 15 finds about two—thirds basing their vote on their feelings——either favorable or unfavorable——toward Reagan, with about one—third focusing their attention more on Mondale.
