ISSUES, VOTERS, AND THE U.S. SENATE RACE IN NEW JERSEY

As the Fall election campaign begins to heat up, incumbent Senator Frank Lautenberg has an advantage over Republican challenger Chuck Haytaian in voter perceptions of how well the candidates would represent New Jersey in the U.S. Senate. Lautenberg is favored over Haytaian on bringing federal money into New Jersey (54% to 11%), accomplishing more for New Jersey in the Senate (49% to 23%) and understanding the problems of New Jersey (43% to 20%). In each of these areas, however, one-third of voters are uncertain about which candidate would do better.
