HMO
Member Satisfaction Survey (1997-present)
New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services
This is a continuing study to provide a comparison of member satisfaction
for HMOs operating in New Jersey. The study methodology has included a
mail and telephone surveys. Over 28,000 adult commercial HMO enrollees
and parents are sampled across 15 New Jersey HMO's in a typical year.
The HMO report card is one of the state's most requested publications.

HIV
Prevention Evaluation Study (1996-present)
New Jersey Division of AIDS Prevention and Control
This study is designed to assess the outcomes of HIV prevention programs
in nine agencies located in urban areas across the state. In-person interviews
are conducted with 1,700 program participants at four points in time.
The study tracks the programs' impact on risk behaviors, attitudes, and
knowledge related to HIV.

Focus groups and a statewide telephone survey were utilized to establish
benchmarks for New Jersey goals in the Healthy NJ 2010 initiative. The

Treatment
Outcome Performance Pilot Study (TOPPS) (1999-present)
Division of Alcoholism, Drug Abuse and Addiction Services
Eagleton tracks a sample of 1,200 participants in treatment services across
the state. Interviews are conducted in-person on a CAPI (Computer Assisted
Personal Interview) system. The purpose of the study is to design an efficient
treatment monitoring system for New Jersey drug treatment centers.
National
Birth Defects Study (1998-present)
Department of Health and Senior Services
CPIP contacts women who have given birth to children with cerain birth
defects and conducts a retrospective interview about pre-birth behaviors.
The final sample will include approximately 300 mothers of children with
birth defects and a matched control group of 100 new mothers.

Temporary
Assistance for Needy Families (1997)
Division of Alcoholism, Drug Abuse and Addiction Services
This study involved computer assisted personal interviews interviewed
with more than 1,300 TANF recipients at welfare offices in 15 New Jersey
counties. The study focused on treatment needs related to drug and alcohol
use as well as other medical and psychological conditions. The study also
involved taking hair samples to validate self-reports of substance use.
Middlesex
County Community Health Survey (1996)
Partnership for a Healthy Middlesex County/Mid-State Health Advisory
Corp.
The purpose of this study was to obtain an overall health perception,
health behavior, and health care needs profile of the Middlesex County
population, with special attention given to minority groups and urban
poor. The survey was conducted by telephone with 3,344 residents of the
county with over-sampling in the more ethnically diverse and urban areas.
Another 148 interviews were conducted in-person in the poorest of neighborhoods
of New Brunswick and Perth Amboy in order to include homes without telephone
service. Another 430 supplemental interviews were conducted at homeless
shelters, soup kitchens, and other social service sites to include the

Mercer
County Community Health Survey (1996)

This study employed a methodology comparable to the Middlesex study (with
an over sample of Trenton) and utilized the same questionnaire. A total
of 1932 telephone interviews, 82 door-to-door interviews, and 255 supplemental
interviews were conducted.
Valley/Ridgewood
Healthy Pathways for Children Study (1996)
The Valley Hospital
The purpose of this study was to ascertain the major health and developmental
needs of young children age birth to 6 and the support needs of their
parents. Issues addressed in the study included access to health care,
knowledge of developmental issues, and evaluation of parent-child interaction.
The study involved group meetings with stakeholders in the child care
arena, three focus groups with parents of young children, and a telephone
survey of 500 parents of children age birth to 6 years old residing in
the Valley Hospital area.
Drug
& Alcohol Study of the Homeless in New Jersey (1996)

This project involved an in-person survey of 892 homeless people at shelters
throughout the state. The objectives of the study were to determine rates
of legal and illegal substance use, lifetime treatment experiences, and
desired treatment services among the homeless population. Urinalysis was
used to validate self-reports of substance use.

Jersey Hospital Association Public Opinion Survey (1995, 1996)
New Jersey Hospital Association
The purpose of this study was to learn about state residents' views on
issues related to health care, such as hospital and emergency room services,
changes in Medicare, Medicaid and charity care, and perceptions of managed
care. A statewide telephone survey of 806 New Jerseyans was conducted
in 1995 as a baseline for the study. Additional topics added to the 1996

Bergen
County Community Health Survey (1995, 2000)
Bergen Partnership for Community Health
The purpose of this study was to obtain an overall health profile of Bergen
County residents. The study included issues such as emotional well-being,
environmental impact, and financial status as functions of health. The
study involved four focus groups with county residents leading to a telephone
survey with 1,000 Bergen residents. Three months later, a supplementary
survey on health information and child health issues was conducted with
a panel of 587 of the original survey participants. The telephone survey
was repeated in 2000 to track progress.

Jersey Household Drug & Alcohol Study (1993, 1998)

This telephone survey of 3,000 randomly selected New Jerseyans, stratified
by county/city is used by the state to determine rates of legal and illegal
substance use, lifetime treatment experiences, and desired treatment services
among state residents. This study was repeated in 1998.
