THE 1977 GUBERNATORIAL ELECTION, PART VIII: DEMOCRATS LEAD IN STATE SENATE RACES BUT MANY STILL UNDECIDED

Democratic candidates for the State Senate lead their Republican opponents but large numbers of voters are still undecided. The latest Eagleton Poll, conducted between September 20 and 27, finds that 39 percent of registered voters say they favor Democrats for the State Senate, 24 percent favor Republicans and 38 percent are still undecided.

THE 1977 GUBERNATORIAL ELECTION, PART VI: MAJORITY SEE NEED FOR TAX

Although a majority of New Jerseyans want the present income tax to self-destruct next June, most now doubt the state can get along “just as well” without the income tax or a replacement. If forced to choose among alternative taxes, most prefer the income tax over a sales tax boost.

Raymond Bateman, the Republican candidate for Governor, continues to lead Democratic Incumbent Brendan Byrne. The latest Eagleton Poll, conducted between September 20 and 27 finds New Jersey’s registered voters favor Bateman over Byrne by 46 percent to 39 percent with 13 percent undecided.
